Dr Gerco Ballintijn (1972) received his MSc in Computer Science from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in August 1996. Subsequently, he worked from October 1996 until April 2003 as a research assistant at the Computer Systems group of Prof. Tanenbaum at the Vrije Universiteit. The topic of his PhD thesis was the design and implementation of a scalable wide-area location service, performed in the context of the Globe project. In October 2003, he successfully defended his dissertation and obtained his PhD. From July 2003 to June 2006, Gerco Ballintijn worked as a scientific staff member in the SEN1 group at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI). His research involved the Deliver project, which was headed by Prof. Brinkkemper and Prof. Klint. The Deliver project dealt with the release, delivery, and deployment of product software.

After his scientific work, Gerco Ballintijn went to work in industry. He worked from July 2006 until February 2010 at Tryllian Solutions. This work included, most notably, client software for the Dutch "Landelijk Patienten Dossier" (LPD) at Microbais. After Tryllian Solutions, he worked on interactive 3D graphics software for the software company rooomy (formerly known as NedSense LOFT). rooomy provides 3D editing and presentation software and services (both interactive and photorealistic) to businesses in retail and real estate. Subsequently, Gerco Ballintijn worked for Dexels for two years, supporting the Sportlink ERP system; and now works for Thales Nederland.

Besides 3D computer graphics, Gerco Ballintijn's work interests include the technical side of software engineering, such as tool support for software development, comprehension, and renovation, but also includes systems-oriented computer science, such as distributed systems, programming languages, and computer security.
